Nigeria’s first female boxer commends Lagos Women Run Organisers

Nigeria’s first female boxing champion, Iyabo Stephens, who participated in the 2017 edition of the Lagos Women Run, was full of commendations for the organisers of the Run.

Iyabo who ran the entire 10 kilometres at her own pace, said the Lagos Women Run gave her and other reIMG-20171119-WA0019tired national Women athletes the opportunity to exercise their bodies and minds especially in an event meant for only Women.
“I was a national team athlete for more than 20 years, nothing of this nature ever came up, where women got a dedicated Run to compete. I was so happy to be part of this year’s event. I missed last year’s Run because of family commitments, but this time around I planned for it and made sure I participated. No regrets doing so. I gained a lot as I was able to burn some calories.
” We need more events like this that would give Women a sense of belonging and the privilege to converge for a common cause.
“I was so excited seeing much older women running and I was challenged when majority of them overtook me around Yaba. What that tells me was that those group of women must have started training weeks before the Run. For next year, I will register on time and start preparations much earlier. My take for next year is definitely not to win the Run, but simply not to allow older women overtake me.”
Iyabo Stephen was full of plaudits for the Run coordinator, Tayo Popoola, who she described as God’s sent for bringing Women together to participate in the 10 kilometres Lagos Women Run. “More highly placed Nigerian Women in the society should take a cue from Tayo Popoola to initiate programmes that will be beneficial to Women folks.”
